What do Central Heating Chemicals do and why should you use them?

In this blog we will discuss the individual types of central heating chemicals, their reasons to be used, the benefits of using them.

The types of chemicals we are going to look at are:

  • System Cleaners
  • Inhibitors
  • Silencers
  • Biocides
  • Anti-Freeze

System Cleaners

System cleaners are heavy duty cleaning chemicals used for the removal of sludge, limescale and other debris. System cleaners are ideal for preparing a heating system for the addition of inhibitor which helps protect and prolong the life of the system.

Inhibitors

Usually clear or pale yellow in colour and composed of a mixture of potassium tetraborate tetrahydrate, disodium molydate, sodium nitrate and 2,2’,2” – nitrilotriethanol.

The chemicals in the inhibitor react with sludge that builds up in your central heating system to break it down and stop the pipes from becoming blocked, it is a crucial part in maintaining your central heating system and may actually void your warranty if it isn’t used.

Silencers

Boiler Silencers help to reduce noise and improve heat transfer in central heating systems. Scale caused by hard water can have a detrimental effect on your heating system. Also known as kettling the build up of scale can make the system noisy and inefficient

Biocides

Biocides are used within your heating system to control microbial growth. They break down destructive debris and settled solids caused by micro-organisms. Dosing your system with the correct biocidal treatment is key to minimising microbially induced corrosion and associated, additional blockages. They will optimise system performance and reduce the potential cost and scale of future maintenance work.

Antifreeze

Used in systems vulnerable to sub-zero temperatures, anti-freeze provides protection against freezing temperatures to stop the water within central heating systems from freezing.
