Macerator Pump Care

Most macerator pumps will give you years of trouble-free service if used according to the instructions given. Most come with a good length of time on their manufacturer warranty to reassure you of this.

However, to ensure the lifespan of your macerator pump, they require regular maintenance to ensure they are kept clean, free of limescale, and in good working order. Looking after a macerator is easy and with the right chemical, it’s as simple as pouring the solution into the system and letting it do the work.

The most common issue that tends to occur with macerator pumps is that the system does not come on or go off when it should, which causes a bad smell. This is usually the result of using bleach or other general cleaning products not specifically designed for use with macerators.

It is important to never use products containing bleach in a macerator as the bleach corrodes the seal around the macerator valve. This results in a faulty system as the macerator cannot sense when to open or close.

To avoid damaging a macerator, it is important to use a specially developed macerator descaler product to clean and descale whilst being gentle on the system.

Using Macerator Cleaner and Descaler

Our recommended macerator cleaner is “Saniflo Cleaner and Descaler.” The concentrated solution contains phosphoric acid, which works to break down limescale and dirt, whilst being gentle on the macerator system. Cleaning a macerator should be carried out regularly – we would recommend once a month in hard water areas and once every three months in soft water areas.

Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to use Saniflo cleaner and descaler.

  1. Disconnect the macerator from the electric supply.
  2. Pour between 1 to 2.5L of Saniflo Cleaner and Descaler into the toilet bowl.
  3. Turn the pump on for a few seconds and allow the descaler to enter the macerator.
  4. Turn the macerator off again and allow the descaler to sit for 2 hours. Do not flush the toilet during this time.
  5. After 2 hours, reconnect the power supply and flush to rinse.

Saniflo Sanialarm

If you are using a Saniflo macerator, a wise purchase for added peace of mind and to avoid major issues might be a Sanialarm.

The Sanialarm has a level pressure switch that triggers an alarm fixed on top of the unit if the volume of water exceeds the maximum allowed level. The alarm emits a continuous warning sound until it is switched off and the problem rectified. The unit is easy to install and only requires 2 X AAA batteries to operate.
