How to prevent Mould in your bathroom.

Keeping your bathroom clean is a necessity, but it will not prevent mould. Mould is a result of high humidity and not a lack of cleanliness, due to your bathroom being one of the most humid rooms in your home it is a haven for mould growth

Preventing the growth of mould is a battle against humidity. Showers, sinks and toilets all-cause humidity to rise and water can also soak into mats, towels and curtains. Taking a hot shower with the door and windows closed forces water vapour to collect on walls, ceilings and floors. All these factors cause humidity levels in your bathroom to rise to create the perfect conditions for mould to grow.

So what are some ways you can prevent mould from growing in the first place?

Provide Proper Ventilation

The first line of defence in decreasing humidity in your bathroom is using an effective ventilation fan. The vent will pull moisture from your bathroom and expel it outside. It is important to run the vent during a bath or shower and for at least 30 minutes after being finished, this is all to prevent moisture build-up on walls, ceilings and floors as mentioned earlier.

Use a Squeegee
Specialized squeegees for shower cleaning exist and are designed for use on both walls and floors. It may not sound like the most fun task to perform after every shower, but it can decrease the moisture levels in your bathroom by a significant margin.

Fix Leaks Immediately
In addition to moisture coming from your shower and sink, water can also accumulate from leaky plumbing. If a leak is found, address the issue immediately even if it is just a small drip. That small drip can cause an increase in the humidity of the room making it easier for mould to grow.

Keeps Towels and Rugs Clean and Dry
Your bathmat, bathroom rug and all your towels are great places for mould to grow, especially if not washed regularly, we advise trying to wash them at least once a week and ensure they are dry before returning them to the bathroom.

Remove bottles & sponges from your shower
It’s best to remove everything from the shower once you are done. Just as water can attach to walls and ceilings so can it attach to shampoo bottles, sponges, washcloths, etc. As the water dries it leaves a spot underneath bottles, or it can simply grow on a sponge or washcloth. Remove everything and keep it dry.

Prevention!
It is always a better decision to prevent the conditions where mould can easily grow than it is to fight it once it takes root in your bathroom. Remove water and moisture from the air and keep everything clean. If you do find mould growing in your home, the best thing to do is call a professional to take care of the issue.
